A DACA Strategy

As people are organizing and mobilizing across the nation to confront the challenges to immigration and values of due process, here is a basic strategy you can take part in as a DACA status holder:

If you have DACA, speak to your current/past employers and ask them to write their members of Congress and Senators.

Employers should state in their letters that they don’t want DACA repealed. Letters should speak about the value that DACA employees bring to the business/job. The more personal, the better. These letters can include stories about how DACA employees contributed to the business and how employers have invested in their employees, etc…

It’s crucial to keep in mind that employers have relied on DACA beneficiaries for their businesses. Therefore, employers can emphasize on how repealing DACA will negatively affect their individual businesses and the economy.

Lastly, encourage employers and local businesses to follow-up with their congresspeople and representatives. Remember, the letters should be on the company’s letterhead.

Legal Clinic, Community Meeting & Rally (espanol abajo)

Event organized in collaboration with: Colectiva Legal del Pueblo, Avelar Immigration Law, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, OneAmerica, and City of Seattle – Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs. (Childcare and light refreshments)

Today, though there is a lot of uncertainty, one thing that we know is that we will get through this! We KNOW the power that collective organizing has, that WE have, together! We have stopped deportations, and protected ourselves and our loved ones from la migra because we know our rights, and we have plans in place.

Come talk to attorneys about your immigration concerns. Then let’s strategize about how we combat racism and anti-immigrant policies locally and nationally. Finally, we will gather in rally/candle vigil to make our voices heard! #notmypresident

SCHEDULE:

1:30 to 2pm- short info session by an immigration attorney to talk about possible upcoming changes in immigration law and policy

2 to 5pm – opportunity for 15 minute consultations with volunteer immigration attorneys

– healing space opportunity to consult with volunteer mental health professionals about how to cope with the fears, plan for safety, help children deal with their fears

– opportunity to develop strategies for resistance and organizing locally

5 to 6 – closing remarks, possible rally or vigil, etc.

FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/events/1393883937318949/

This is a creation of space in which any and all people are welcome, accepted, and celebrated. Love wins, and this rally is to emphasize that point. If you are afraid, if you don’t feel safe, if you are hurting in any way, we are here for you. I hope to see everyone on Sunday. You are loved.

Post Election Community Response Forum (Capitol Hill)

Sunday, Nov 13 5-10pm

V2 (1525 11th Ave, Seattle, Washington 98122)

FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/events/187189638405404/

This will not be a rally or a march, but an opportunity to have meaningful conversations with our friends and neighbors. We will also develop some immediate action items, and hope this space gives away to further organizing to fortify our communities against what may be to come.

A Word

What I have experienced this past week has been nothing short of a nightmare turned to reality. My mind races and my heart beats fast, full of anxiety. I am truly devastated, shocked, frightened and heartbroken. I can’t accept that a person that stands for so much hate and bigotry could be supported in this way. This newly elected president feels like a repeat version of George Wallace, the southern segregationist that ran on a presidential platform of white supremacy in the 1960s. Wallace has numerous hateful quotes, but the one that sticks in my head is what he spoke during his inaugural address as governor of Alabama in which he stated, “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever” (Wallace, 1963 Inaugural Address). These words reinforced and reflected the hatred and racism of the times. Today, seems like little has changed.

But we can’t afford to stand still. I can’t afford to remain frozen. I attended a rally in my community last night and it was amazing how many people were there, supporting each other, crying, chanting. It made me feel less alone. As we heal and get past this shock, we have to be active now more than ever. To protect our rights, our safety, and protect our future.

I will continue doing what is in my power to create change continue working for our community. I will continue posting legal and educational resources and information in this forum. I also urge readers out there to forward any resources they have so we can disseminate and share the information more widely.

In the spirit of this, please see the following link for scholarships for undocumented students by Carolina Valdivia in her blog My (un)documented life: Scholarships. Please feel to share and distribute widely.

In solidarity,

Angelita
